Police shot and killed a man who stabbed an officer in Gatineau, Que., around midnight Wednesday, the force said Thursday.
The unnamed officer is expected to survive their injuries, according to a news release issued in French.
It said officers were called to rue Saint-Rédempteur in the city’s central Hull neighbourhood just before midnight. The officer was stabbed while responding to that call.
The injured officer was taken to hospital and treated for multiple injuries. They are expected to survive, police said.
According to the news release, officers shot the man while protecting their colleague. The unnamed man died of his injuries.
The Sûreté du Québec, which stepped in to investigate, confirmed the man who was killed was the same man who stabbed the Gatineau police officer.
Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), is taking over the investigation. Gatineau police said because of this they won’t be releasing further information.
Neither Gatineau police nor the BEI has answered key questions about why police were called in the first place, or how the violence played out.
A police command centre is set up at the scene, Gatineau police said. The north end of Saint-Rédempteur is closed between rue Mangin and boulevard Sacré-Coeur, near where Saint-Rédempteur turns into boulevard Montclair.
