Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 31-year-old Ottawa resident with two counts of careless driving in connection with a fatal crash on Highway 417 in May.

The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on May 14 near the Kinburn Side Road intersection.

OPP said the investigation showed an eastbound vehicle had crossed the centre median and struck a westbound vehicle.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 77-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said at the time that a passenger in that vehicle, a 71-year-old woman, had serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The eastbound driver faces charges of careless driving causing death and careless driving causing bodily harm.

While they released few details Friday, OPP said in a news release that “the OPP would like to remind all drivers that if you need to tend to your children in the back seat, pull over to the side of the road when safe to do so.”

The accused is to appear in court in January.
