A code orange, which brings together resources to respond to a potential disaster or mass casualty incident, was called shortly before 5 p.m. at  CHEO, which is a Level 1 trauma centre.

Munter said the incident was not as serious as it could have been, but CHEO staff did not know this when the code orange was called.

“In fact, indications were that it could have been much worse,” said Munter, who praised the teamwork and quick action of CHEO staff. Resources were immediately redirected to the emergency department to prepare for the arrival of injured children.
