Heavy rainfall bringing up to 40 mm for Ottawa

Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday morning Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning advising of heavy rain and dangerous travel at times.

Meteorologists are forecasting 30 to 40 millimetres of rain to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Severe weather is expected to impact most of eastern Ontario including Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley, Smiths Falls, Kingston and Cornwall.

Heavy precipitation will start Tuesday evening tapering off by Wednesday morning. Environment Canada says heavier amounts of rain could fall again Wednesday afternoon before changing to snow by the evening.

Temperatures are expected to drop to -4 C Wednesday changing the rain into snow. Ottawa could see minus double digit temperatures on Thursday.

With the frozen ground and expected rainfall amounts, there are concerns of accumulating rain on roads making driving conditions slippery. The same can be said for sidewalks as temperatures drop Wednesday evening.

There is uncertainty for what areas might see the heaviest amounts of rain, but localized flooding is possible.

A fog advisory was also put in place for Kingston.
