Two adults taken to hospital following basement fire in Centretown West

Two adults have been taken to hospital in stable condition following a fire that started in a basement of an apartment building in Centretown West in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters received multiple calls shortly before 4 a.m., reporting there was smoke in the basement of a low-rise building in the 300 block of Cambridge Street.

When crews arrived at the scene and saw flames were coming out the basement window, they declared a working fire to request additional resources.

They then started extinguishing the fire by advancing a hose line inside the building.

The fire was declared under control at 4:11 a.m. It was contained to the area of origin before it could spread into the entire building.

Firefighters then searched the structure for any occupants and did not find anyone inside.

An OC Transpo bus provided shelter for the residents, while firefighters fought the flames.

Victim Services was also dispatched to provide the necessary help.

The investigation into what led to the fire is ongoing.
