Ontario Provincial Police officers from the Leeds County detachment are investigating the first fatal collision of the year in the region.
Officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on County Road 29, just south of Smiths Falls, at 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. A member of the Smiths Falls Police Service, along with the Smiths Falls Fire Department and the Lanark County Paramedic Service, also responded.

At the scene, police found a car had gone off the road, through a ditch and into a tree, and later caught fire.
The lone occupant, a 31-year-old man from the nearby town of Jasper, was removed from the car by a passerby and the Smiths Falls officer, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had been removed from the car before it caught fire, the OPP said on X.
The collision remains under investigation, police said in a news release.
