A 37-year-old man is facing more than two dozen charges after being arrested in connection with what the Ottawa Police Service described as “hate-motivated” incidents that left at least three other people injured.

A news release issued Jan. 16 said police had been called to a building on Catherine Street in downtown Ottawa at approximately 2:30 p.m. the day before following reports of a man causing a disturbance.

The suspect had fled the area by the time officers arrived there, but soon after multiple 911 emergency callers reported the same man was damaging vehicles parked along Arlington Avenue.

According to police, the suspect then assaulted several people on Gladstone Avenue near Metcalfe Street “while shouting derogatory racial slurs in relation to their specific ethnicities.”

Officers then arrested the man, who, according to the news release, also assaulted and threatened them.

Jourdain Doyle, of Ottawa, was charged with: three counts of assault; assault by choking, suffocating or strangling; assault with a weapon; two counts of intimidation by violence; two counts of extortion; two counts of mischief to property under $5,000; eight counts of uttering threats; possession of a weapon for committing an offence; three counts of assault of a peace officer; resisting arrest; robbery or assault with the intent to steal; and two counts of breach of probation.

He was held in custody pending a scheduled court appearance on Thursday.

The Ottawa Police Service said it was asking anyone who may have been injured in the incident, but did not speak to police at the scene to contact investigators. Anyone who witnessed these incidents or had related information was asked to contact the OPS Central Criminal Investigation Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5166.
