The province’s police watchdog agency has invoked its mandate after a man was seriously injured in an Ontario Provincial Police operation in the Stone Mills Township area Friday night.

In a release on X, formerly Twitter, the OPP said police were called for a disturbance at a residence on Lennox and Addington County Road 4.

Once there, police attempted to communicate with a man inside the home.

“During the interaction, the male exited the residence, and police discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN) and their firearm,” the OPP message said.

The man was transported to hospital with serious injuries, OPP said.

The nature of the man’s injuries was not clear.

“As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information,” the OPP said.

The SIU was not immediately available for comment.

Stone Mills Township is about 170 kilometres southwest of Ottawa.
