The students were all safe during the incident. Neighbours were advised to remain indoors and the Lake Avenue area was closed to vehicle traffic.

“We had a barricaded person at a residence,” OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson said after the situation was resolved. “We were able to take the person into custody without incident around 3:30 p.m.”

The Upper Canada School District School Board sent emails to parents at Carleton Place High School, which is on Lake Avenue West, and Caldwell Street Public School, which is about a block away from Lake Avenue West, advising that students would remain in school under a “hold and secure” under the direction of police.

During a hold and secure, all students stay inside the school, exterior doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building.

The families of students at the high school were notified of the hold and secure by email at 2:15 p.m. and were told at 2:23 p.m. that it had been lifted.

The families of students at Caldwell Street Public School were notified of the hold and secure at 2:18 p.m. and were told at 2:50 p.m. that it had been lifted.
