Two Ottawa police officers seriously injured after cruiser hit by suspected stolen car

Two officers were seriously injured in a head-on collision with an allegedly stolen vehicle over the weekend, Ottawa police said.

Two officers saw a vehicle that had been reported stolen near Woodfield Drive and Merivale Road on Saturday night, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release.

As police officers approached the vehicle, police said the suspects accelerated to avoid police, but ended up striking a cruiser head-on. Both officers in the cruiser sustained serious injuries, but have since been released from hospital.

Police have charged three youths, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The driver of the suspected stolen vehicle faces charges of possessing property obtained by crime, operating a vehicle causing bodily harm, breach of probation, flight from police, obstruction and assaulting a peace officer.

One youth passenger faces charges of possessing property obtained by crime and failing to comply with a release order, and another youth passenger is charged with possessing property obtained by crime.

The driver was set to appear in court on Tuesday and the passengers will appear at a later date, police said.
