The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced Thomas Sirman of the Ottawa 67’s is the recipient of the Roger Neilson Memorial Award.
The honour is presented to the OHL’s top academic post-secondary student annually. First presented in 2005, Sirman is the third member of the 67’s to win the award in the last six years.
The defenceman had an average of over 83 per cent in his education at Queen’s University while in his third season with the 67’s.
“Education is extremely important in my family, so being able to share this award with them is amazing,” Sirman said in a press release. “I’m very fortunate to have been able to begin my university education while playing in the OHL.”
The 19-year-old, originally from Aurora, Ont., played over 40 games and recorded 16 points. His 2023-24 season was shortened due to an injury. After rehab, he returned to the lineup before Christmas and served as an alternate captain for the first time in his career.
He was drafted in the third round, 60th overall by Ottawa and has appeared in 160 games, with 12 goals.
“Thomas sets the academic bar high, and is an excellent role model for the 67’s high school players who are moving on to university next year,” Eileen Duffin, 67’s Housing and Education Coordinator, said.
