Nine Via Rail trains heading east and west were delayed in the Kingston region on Saturday while a police investigation of a suspicious package shut down the tracks in both directions for several hours.
A statement from the Via Rail media-relations department said the nine trains were stopped at various locations, awaiting track clearance, for between one and five hours.

Other trains were held at their destinations, the statement added.
“The incident did not involve a VIA Rail train; however, it did have an impact our operations,” the statement said.
Police completed the investigation shortly before 5 p.m., and, after signal checks were completed, trains were on the move again by 5:30 p.m., Via Rail said.
Kingston Police posted online that it and the Ontario Provincial Police had found no explosive device after concluding the investigation. Pedestrians had been asked earlier to avoid the roadway and the area of Montreal Street between Briceland Street and John Counter Boulevard.
