Ethiopian runners took the top spots in the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon on Sunday in the 50th edition of the city’s annual marathon.
Lencho Tesfaye Anbesa finished first in the men’s event with a time of two hours 12 minutes 41 seconds while Maregu Hayelom was the No. 1 woman, finishing in 2:32:20.

Anbesa edged out another Ethiopian runner, Adamu Getahun, who came across the line in 2:13.29, while Kenya’s Laban Mutai Kipkemboi took third in 2:14.00.

The top Canadian was eighth-place S Raez Villanueva in 2:28.59. Two other Canadians were right behind him, with Daniel Fournier ninth in 2:31.03 and Frederick Jouin 10th in 2:31.25.
Ethiopia’s Tinebeb Nebiyu finished second in the women’s division (2:41.40) while Canadian Rachel Hannah nailed down third place (2:48.03) ahead of another Canadian, Alexandra Hynes (2:49.30).
An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said Sunday evening that a number of medical responses were required during Sunday’s marathon and half marathon, but said no one was transported in critical condition.
