Paul Morneau, operations commander for the Ottawa Paramedic Service, said seven people were involved in the three-car crash that occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
A three-year-old boy was in critical condition when he was airlifted to hospital with “multi-system trauma.”
A three-year-old girl was also in critical condition and taken to hospital via ground ambulance. An adult woman was taken to hospital in critical condition with head injuries, along with an adult man. Another man was taken to hospital in serious, but stable condition, Morneau said.
Two others were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, he said.
One vehicle was on fire following the crash, said Bill Dickson, Ontario Provincial Police’s media-relations co-ordinator for eastern Ontario.
First responders from Ottawa Fire Services, the Ottawa Police Service and the Ottawa Paramedic Service attended the scene.

Dan Kirvan, Ottawa Fire Services’ chief of special operations, said firefighters extracted one person from a vehicle and extinguished the car fire.
Glen Gower, Ottawa city councillor for Stittsville ward, said he was trying to alert residents to avoid the area and to stay off area roads due to the traffic congestion.
“My thoughts are with the families and individuals involved in this awful collision, especially the children involved,” Gower said. “Thank you to the first responders who responded and went into action to help the people who were injured. And, with the ongoing highway closure and traffic congestion, please avoid any unnecessary travel to the area.”
