The City of Ottawa is currently under a severe thunderstorm watch as a system is moving into the area Thursday afternoon and into the evening.
Environment Canada issued the weather alert just before 10:30 a.m. warning of strong winds and heavy rain.
The watch stretches across much of eastern Ontario including Smiths Falls, Carlton Place, Kingston, and Cornwall.
Meteorologists are forecasting extreme rainfall of 40-70 mm and wind gusts reaching 90 km/h.
It is anticipated that these winds could be strong enough to toss loose object, damage buildings and even tip large vehicles over.
Another concern due to the quick and heavy downpour is flash flooding on the roads and highways.
Unlike recent thunderstorms in the Ottawa area, Environment Canada is not advising of possible tornadoes at this time.
