The official count was expected to take place later Monday.

Bélisle, who was elected in 2021, cited death threats and a “hostile” political environment as reasons for leaving the position.

The other candidates for the post in Sunday’s byelection were:

  • Rémi Bergeron
  • Stéphane Bisson
  • Olive Kamanyana
  • Mathieu Saint-Jean
  • Daniel Feeny

Kamanyama was an independent councillor in the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward and received 10.9 per cent of the vote for mayor.
