A coroner’s inquest is to be held into the 2018 beating death of Marco Michaud, 36, at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.

Many of the details surrounding Michaud’s beating were revealed at the trial of his three attackers.

Michaud, 36, was being held at the Innes Road awaiting trial for second-degree murder. He was apparently hoping to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.

Court was told the victim had a long record with convictions for drugs, arson and robbery.

The savage killing was captured on jail security video and shown in court.

The trouble began around mid-afternoon on April 11, 2018 when attackers surrounded Michaud and pulled him into a day room.

Mohamed Barkhadle, awaiting trial in another killing, was the first to stomp the victim in the head.

Inmate Pierre Senatus was next to kick and stomp on Michaud followed by inmate Jimmy St. Hilaire.

In all, Michaud was stomped more than two dozen times.

Michaud was pronounced dead about two weeks later when he was taken off life support.

In October, the three attackers pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter. Senatus and St. Hilaire were sentenced to eight years in prison. Barkhadle was sentenced to six years for his “lesser role.”

The judge and the Crown acknowledged the mitigating factor that the killers accepted responsibility and, in turn, spared everyone a trial.

The coroner’s service said the inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Michaud’s death.

The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

“Details regarding the date and location will be provided at a later date,” the coroner’s office said in a release.
