Environment Canada says it’s tracking a severe thunderstorm near Ottawa that could bring 90 km/h wind gusts and a potential tornado.
As of 3:30 p.m., the storm was located near Mississippi Mills and moving east at 60 km/h, the agency said in a thunderstorm warning issued Sunday afternoon.
The warning is also in place for the area around Smiths Falls and Perth.
It comes as numerous rainfall warnings remain in place across the region, with heavy rain expected to continue in Ottawa and the surrounding area on Sunday.
Between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain could fall in Ottawa on Sunday, Environment Canada said in an updated warning issued Sunday morning.
Warnings have also been issued across much of the province and western Quebec.
Nearby municipalities including Pembroke, Carleton Place and Gatineau can expect similar amounts of rain, increasing to as much as 80 mm in some places such as Renfrew and Bancroft.
Heavy rain could lead to flash floods and water pooling on roads, Environment Canada said in its warnings. People should also be on the alert for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
