One driver has died from her injuries after Tuesday’s wrong-way collision on Highway 401 near Kingston, Ont., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said Wednesday.
Around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, a westbound vehicle struck another vehicle head-on in the highway’s eastbound lanes near the Gardiners Road exit, OPP said.
Both drivers had to be extricated from the wreckage and were initially transported to Kingston General Hospital in life-threatening condition.
On Wednesday, OPP said the 41-year-old Kingston woman driving the vehicle that was travelling the wrong way has died from her injuries.
The other driver’s injuries are no longer considered life-threatening, OPP said later on Tuesday. A child who was a passenger in one of the vehicles was not seriously injured but was transported to hospital.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for eight hours following the collision, reopening around 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to OPP.
OPP continue to investigate the collision with the assistance of Office of the Chief Coroner. No charges have been laid.
