A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the Ottawa region by Environment Canada.
An updated advisory at 4:29 p.m. Tuesday said conditions were favourable for the development of “dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain.”
The possible hazards included wind gusts of as much as 90 km/h and local rainfall amounts of up to 50 millimetres.

The advisory was to cover the period into early Tuesday evening, Environment Canada added.
“Thunderstorm development still remains possible, however, more of the thunderstorm activity looks to remain near the St. Lawrence River and south. In the event these thunderstorms track north, they may bring strong winds and heavy rain to the (Ottawa) area,” it said.
The weather agency also said that severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions were favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Similar thunderstorm watch notices were issued for West Quebec and other communities in Eastern Ontario, including Maxville-Alexandria, Prescott-Russell and Morrisburg-Long Sault.
