Barrhaven townhome complex heavily damaged in fire

A fire crew remained on watch overnight following a stubborn fire at a multi-unit terrace home residence in Barrhaven Friday night.

Operators at the 911 service received several calls before 10 p.m. the fire in the 2600 block of Longfields Drive.

Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed the back side of the three-storey complex was engulfed in flames from the main floor unit up to the attic.

Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside, while others began searching all the units for any occupants still inside.

Sections of the wall were torn down to extinguish the flames inside. No one was found inside.

Chainsaws were needed to battle flames in the roof area.

Crews also used caution as balconies were at risk of collapsing.

The fire was declared under control at 23:21 p.m.

An Ottawa fire investigator was assigned to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

There were no reports of injuries.
