Woman shot by police in Westboro facing 13 charges

A woman shot by police in Westboro last week is charged with assaulting a police officer and several firearm offences.

Morgan Rachel Laplante, 25, was shot by police during a traffic stop on a usually quiet residential street last Friday. She’s facing 13 charges related to the incident.

Following the incident, police said Laplante had been injured in a “police involved” shooting. Paramedics told CBC she was taken to hospital in critical condition. She remains in hospital in stable condition.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now investigating.

According to the SIU, Laplante exited a vehicle during a traffic stop near Churchill and Avondale avenues. She then fled and police chased her, the SIU said.

“At some point, the officer discharged his firearm and the woman was struck,” the SIU said in a news release.

Police swarmed the area, surprising residents who said they’re not used to such activity in their normally peaceful neighbourhood.

Laplante was convicted in relation to an assault in 2019, and faced additional charges stemming from that event.
