Just when the capital region has recovered from major heat conditions, Environment Canada has posted a cautionary alert for the region to be on the lookout for possible heavy rains.

“Heavy rain Thursday night through Friday,” the agency says in a “special weather statement” online Wednesday.

The outlook is for “rain at times heavy,” with amounts possibly exceeding 50 mm.

Forecasters are blaming a low pressure system interacting with the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby, which began in Florida on Wednesday and is expected to provide heavy rainfall for eastern Ontario Thursday night through Friday.

The storm system has moved into the Carolinas and continues on a northeasterly path.

“Forecast rainfall amounts could change and rainfall warnings may be issued as confidence in the track of the system increases” the agency says.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
