Christine Fréchette, the provincial immigration minister, will become minister of the economy and energy, taking on the two files formerly in the hands of Pierre Fitzgibbon, who resigned this week, according to Radio-Canada sources.
Jean-François Roberge, the minister responsible for the French language, will take on the immigration file in addition to his current responsibilities.
Premier François Legault is expected to announce the appointments at an afternoon news conference on Thursday.
Fitzgibbon, who had been dubbed a “superminister” because of the importance of the two ministerial appointments he held, resigned this week, citing a loss of motivation for politics.
He leaves Fréchette to continue working on Bill 69, a large piece of legislation that would, according to the government, help Quebec produce more green energy.
Fréchette represents Sanguinet, a Montérégie riding that includes the municipalities of Saint-Constant, Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Rémi. She was first elected in October 2022.
She was previously president and general manager of the Chambre de commerce de l’Est de Montréal.
