Families looking for information can call 613-737-7600, extension 3845, CHEO said in the release.

The driver of the transport truck was not injured, police said.

“Currently, we cannot comment on the individual injuries to the children/youth, but we can confirm that we have engaged all resources available to us and we have also alerted our colleagues at other local hospitals.” CHEO’s release stated.

The hospital said a code orange, which brings together resources to respond to a potential disaster or mass casualty incident, was called shortly before 5 p.m. “As a hospital, we immediately redirected resources to our Emergency Department to prepare for the arrival of the young patients,” CHEO said.

In an update just after 7 p.m., CHEO said the code orange had been discontinued and that the children continued to receive medical care.

Officers from the Russell County detachment were investigating, the OPP said, adding that a section of Route 400 is currently closed. The public was asked to avoid the area so emergency crews can do their jobs.
