Former Ottawa city councillor Mathieu Fleury will no longer serve as chief administrative officer (CAO) for Cornwall, Ont., the city announced in a news release Wednesday.
“The City of Cornwall would like to inform that it has parted ways with Mr. Mathieu Fleury as Chief Administrative Officer,” according to the news release.
“Council would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Fleury for all his work over the past year and his dedication to the City of Cornwall and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
The city did not specify why Fleury is leaving the position after barely a year, or whose decision it was.
Fleury represented the downtown ward of Rideau-Vanier on Ottawa city council for three terms from 2010 to 2022, when he did not seek re-election.
He went on to serve as interim executive director of J.W. MacIntosh Community Support Services, an organization in Williamsburg, Ont., that provides housing and community support services.
In August 2023, the City of Cornwall hired him for a five-year term as chief administrative officer.
On Tuesday, Cornwall city council held a closed-door meeting to discuss a single item: “Performance Evaluation Process.” According to the agenda, the meeting was called to discuss “personal matters about an identifiable individual, including municipal or local board employees.”
Tracey Bailey, Cornwall’s treasurer and general manager of financial services, will serve as interim CAO until a permanent replacement is found, the city said.
CBC has attempted to reach Fleury for comment but has so far received no response.
