The Ottawa Police Service said Friday its Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section (SACA) was investigating what was believed to be an abduction attempt in Orléans on Oct. 6 and asked for public assistance in identifying a suspect and vehicle.

Between 11 a.m. and 12 noon that day, police said in a release, the suspect approached a group of children and offered candy. While in his vehicle, the suspect then slowed and stopped next to the children, but he drove away quickly after another adult approached.

The news release said the suspect was described as a middle eastern male in his 50s, wearing a hat. The vehicle was described as a black or dark-coloured sedan. The vehicle would have travelled south on Boyer Road before heading west toward Hunters Run Gate.

The release also said Ottawa police reminded parents to frequently review safety tips for children, including what they should do when approached by a stranger.

Where possible, avoid walking alone, the release advised, adding that those who must walk alone should:

  • Ensure a family member or caregiver knows your route and arrival time;
  • Do not talk to strangers;
  • Do not accept rides from strangers;
  • If an unknown adult is seeking your attention, do not approach them or the vehicle;
  • If being followed, go to a public place, a known residence or shout for help.
