A driver from Kingston made a trip to the Chik-fil-A in Kanata, but it ended with a possible $5,000 fine instead of a tasty sandwich.
Police have been using the Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera, which has helped them catch drivers disobeying laws.
The driver on Oct. 16 was caught on Highway 417 heading to Chik-fil-A. The ALPR scanned the plate and found it was expired. Further investigation led to police discovering the driver was also uninsured. This results in a $5,000 fine upon conviction.
“That’s one expensive sandwich,” provincial police noted.
Officials also stopped three other vehicles over the course of the afternoon, with one person being caught with a driving suspension for not paying their family support payments.
The ALPR system is able to scan 5,000 plates an hour compared to a provincial database, which reads suspended, prohibited and drivers without licences.
