Several people were injured and a vehicle caught fire on Highway 417 after a rush-hour crash in Ottawa’s west end Friday, authorities say.

An Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson said they received a call shortly after 4 p.m. for a collision involving multiple vehicles near Stittsville.

All lanes of the highway have been shut down west of Palladium Drive, OPP said in a social media post just before 4:30 p.m.

The closures would remain in place for several hours, police said.

Dan Kirvan, spokesperson for Ottawa Fire Service’s special operations unit, told CBC News three vehicles were involved in the crash and one caught on fire.

He said fire crews extricated one person from one vehicle. An air ambulance landed on the highway and transferred one person to hospital, Kirvan added.

Paramedics called it a “major collision” and said they would be providing an update later on injuries.
