Gatineau, Que., police say officers shot and killed a man after an officer was stabbed around midnight Wednesday into Thursday.
The unnamed officer is expected to survive their injuries, according to a police news release in French.
It said officers were called to rue Saint-Rédempteur in the central Hull neighbourhood just before midnight and it was while responding to the call than the officer was stabbed.
The officer was taken to a hospital to get care for multiple injuries and is expected to survive, police said.
A man was shot in the process of police protecting their colleague, according to the news release, and that unnamed man died of his injuries.
Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, is taking over the investigation. Gatineau police said because of this they won’t be releasing further information.
Neither Gatineau police nor the BEI have answered key questions at this early stage such as why police were called and how exactly the violence played out.
The BEI told Radio-Canada that the Sûreté du Québec is also involved in the criminal investigation.
A police command centre is being set up at the scene, Gatineau police said. The north end of Saint-Rédempteur is closed between rue Mangin and boulevard Sacré-Coeur — around where Saint-Rédempteur turns into boulevard Montclair.
The road closure is about a kilometre and a half northwest of Gatineau city hall.
