Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says he plans to work with councillors on a motion that would see the City of Ottawa prioritize buying Canadian products in response to U.S. tariffs.
In a social media post Sunday afternoon, Sutcliffe said he intends to introduce the motion at the city’s Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday.
“The trade war that began with Donald Trump’s tariffs will be harmful to Canada and to Ottawa,” Sutcliffe wrote. “We must get #TeamOttawa working together to protect our local economy.”
U.S. tariffs of 25 per cent on nearly all Canadian goods are set to go into effect Tuesday. The Canadian government has responded with retaliatory tariffs of 25 per cent on $155 billion worth of American goods coming into Canada, of which tariffs on an immediate $30 billion will be implemented Tuesday.
Sutcliffe said he will also convene a meeting of the leaders of Ottawa’s major business and economic development organizations to “develop an action plan to support and promote local business.”
In what he called an effort to ensure the economic success of the region, Sutcliffe said he will meet with Gatineau Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonette later this week.
