Radio-Canada has learned the National Capital Commission (NCC) has chosen the new Alexandra Bridge design.
The winning design is the one known as “Motion” when the three final designs were revealed in October.
It is inspired by the flow of the Ottawa River and the rippling form of one of its native species.
“The motion design is a tribute to the dynamic, ever-changing motion of the river, inspired by the eel,” said architect Martin Knight in October as the shortlist was revealed. “The bridge’s graceful form reflects the eel’s motion.”
Knight explained that each design has a gathering place, and the two vehicular lanes can be closed to create even larger public spaces for special occasions.
It will have cycling and pedestrian lanes.
The current bridge, one of five taking drivers across the river between Ottawa and Gatineau, turns 124 this year and is at the end of its lifespan, according to the NCC.
It has said, to some disappointment, its age and condition rule out repairs.
Further public consultations are expected on the chosen design.
Construction on the new bridge is expected to run from 2028 to 2032.
