Ottawa’s PWHL team name goes electric with the Charge

The capital’s professional women’s hockey team wants to make a power-packed impact on the city and league through its new name, the Ottawa Charge.

All six Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) franchises unveiled names and logos Monday after a first season competing under their city names.

Ottawa is going with a red, grey and yellow colour scheme and a stylized, spinning O (or is it C?) designed to appear in motion.

“‘Charge’ pays tribute to Ottawa itself: from the city’s motto ‘Advance – Ottawa – En Avant‘, nodding to its constant state of dynamic growth and forward progress as Canada’s Capital City,” according to a league news release.

Its logo tries to evoke the energy and electricity of the team and its fans, while the redesigned website promises “high-voltage hockey” and asks visitors to “join the surge.”

A sports team explains different elements of its logo, meant to evoke a white O in motion.

Trademark applications last fall suggested the Ottawa Alert was an option, or at least a trial balloon.

The PWHL said new uniforms will be revealed closer to the start of the next season, when each team will play 30 games instead of 24.

The schedule has not been released.
