Police in Gatineau, Que., shot and killed a man after he stabbed an officer around midnight Wednesday.
The unnamed officer is expected to survive their injuries, according to a Gatineau police news release issued in French.
It said officers were called to rue Saint-Rédempteur in the city’s central Hull neighbourhood just before midnight.
Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), said in its own news release that the original 911 call was about someone making disturbing comments.
An officer was hurt while responding to that call, both police and the BEI said.
On Thursday afternoon, Gatineau police Chief Simon Fournier said in a French statement that the injured officer was cut multiple times on their arms, shoulders and neck, but was lucky to avoid injury to any arteries or organs.
According to the BEI, officers then shot and fatally injured the man. His name has not been released.
The BEI has taken over the investigation. Gatineau police said because of this they won’t be releasing further information.
The Sûreté du Québec has also stepped in to investigate the stabbing, though charges won’t be laid because the accused is dead.
A police command centre is set up at the scene, Gatineau police said. The north end of Saint-Rédempteur is closed between rue Mangin and boulevard Sacré-Coeur, near where Saint-Rédempteur turns into boulevard Montclair.
