Severe thunderstorm warning lifted in Ottawa, Gatineau

Environment Canada has lifted its severe thunderstorm warnings for Ottawa, parts of eastern Ontario and sections of western Quebec.

The alert was downgraded to a thunderstorm watch, with the agency adding that conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms.

The weather agency issued the initial warning after 6 p.m on Monday, with it lifting before 8 p.m. You can track the status of the alert in real time here

The primary threat is heavy rain approaching 100 mm, the agency warned.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods, while strong wind gusts can toss objects and damage buildings and trees, said Environment Canada.

People are asked to take cover immediately when threatening weather approaches, avoid driving through water on roads and to beware of lightning.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
