An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm in relation related to serious injuries sustained by a 40-year-old man in Trenton, Ont., last year.
A Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation revealed that on the morning of Nov. 25, 2023, an officer observed a man urinating in front of the CIBC bank on Dundas Street West.
Following this, the SIU says the officer handcuffed the man and “an altercation ensued between the two.”
The man was subsequently taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the SIU said in a news release Thursday.
As a result of the investigation, OPP Const. Jeffry Szijarto has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville, Ont., July 25.
