Alcohol, speed cited in fatal single-vehicle crash on Quebec Hwy 50

PAPINEAUVILLE, Que. — Alcohol and excessive speed are suspected in a one-car crash Friday night that left one young man dead and four others seriously injured early Saturday night in Papineauville, about 100 kilometres east of Gatineau.
Emergency services were called to the on Highway 50 around 3:15 a.m., the Sûreté du Québec said.

“It was a single vehicle with five occupants on board which, according to witnesses, was traveling at high speed. (The driver) found himself losing control and hit guardrails before rolling over,” SQ spokesperson Stéphane Tremblay said Saturday.

“The driver of the vehicle was ejected and he was pronounced dead at the hospital during the night,” he said.
The victim is a 22-year-old man from Longueuil, on Montreal’s South Shore.
All four passengers were injured, but their conditions are not considered life-threatening.
“We already know that alcohol and speed could have played a role in this collision,” Tremblay said.
Highway 50 was closed to eastbound traffic in the area until Saturday morning.
