Apartment building fire snarls Centretown morning traffic

Ottawa Fire Services took down a smoky fire in a mid-level apartment building Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called at about 9:15 a.m. from a monitoring agency reporting active fire alarms at a multi-residential four-storey building in the 300 block of Maclaren Street.

Several 911 callers reported black and grey smoke coming from the structure.

Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed smoke coming from the structure and reported that residents had evacuated.

A “working fire” was declared to dispatch additional resources to the scene.

Firefighters entered the structure and quickly located the fire in a third-floor unit.

The fire was extinguished and contained to the unit before it could spread.

Searches of the building were done and there were no occupants inside.

Victim services has been contacted for one adult who will be displaced due to the fire.

All other residents have been allowed back inside.

A fire inspector has assigned to determine the cause and origin of the fire
