A one-year-old girl has died of the injuries she sustained in a three-vehicle collision on Highway 417 in Ottawa’s west end on Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Michael Fathi said Monday afternoon that the baby died in the early morning hours of June 2.

The girl was airlifted to CHEO hospital in critical condition following the crash, and two adults were also hospitalized Friday afternoon in serious by stable condition. Fathi said he did not have an update on their conditions as of Monday afternoon.

An OPP spokesperson previously said one adult and another child, age three and an occupant of the same vehicle, had been released from hospital after treatment for minor injuries.

First responders initially said both children involved were three-year-olds, but that was updated on Saturday.

The crash occurred just past 4 p.m. on Friday, during the late afternoon traffic rush.

The OPP spokesperson said one vehicle travelling eastbound on the highway crossed the centre median and struck two others heading westbound.

The investigation into the cause of the crash was continuing, the spokesperson said Sunday.

Highway 417 remained closed in both directions for several hours — westbound at Palladium Drive and eastbound at Carp Road — with eastbound lanes reopening just before 8 p.m. Friday, followed by the reopening of westbound lanes a few hours later.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dashcam video was asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
