A Carleton Place man already charged with first-degree murder is now facing additional charges of assault and sexual assault with what the Ontario Provincial Police say are incidents dating back to late 2022 and early 2023.

The OPP began investigating after an individual reported being assaulted and sexually assaulted, a news release on Tuesday said, adding that the suspect had been arrested at the Brockville jail, where he has been held since December.

The new charges against Marcel Lapensee, 56, include two counts of sexual assault and one each of assault, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and voyeurism.

The investigation was continuing, OPP said, adding that Lapensee remained in custody and was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on May 31.

In December, Lapensee and 23-year-old Samantha Osborne of Iroquois were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rose Kerwin in November.

The body of Kerwin, 50, was found in the Mississippi River near Pakenham on Nov. 12. She was reported missing on Nov. 13.
