Chelsea issues ‘precautionary’ boil-water advisory to residents

Chelsea issued what it called a “precautionary” boil-water advisory on Friday for those residents served by the west Quebec municipality’s water system while it continued to clean up and make repairs following last week’s torrential rainfall.

The notice posted Friday afternoon on the Chelsea website said the subcontractor responsible for managing the filtration plant had reported a “low chlorine level” and the municipal team was ensuring that work was done to restore compliance “as quickly as possible.”

It also advised residents to boil their water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming it until the advisory was lifted.

On Wednesday, again citing last week’s downpours from the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby, Chelsea issued a notice asking those served by its water system to reduce consumption as much as possible until Aug. 31 to facilitate maintenance operations at the filtration plant.

It said at that time that the water was “safe and fit for consumption.”

On Thursday, Chelsea requested $1 million from the Quebec government to help fund recovery efforts following the heavy rain and winds.

“It’s still very (early) for a precise number (for recovery costs), but the amount confirmed to (Quebec’s public safety department) in the initial estimate is indeed $1 million,” Ghislaine Grenier, Chelsea’s director of human resources and communications, said in an email.
