Chelsea lifts post-storm state of emergency

Chelsea has lifted the state of emergency that had been in place since heavy rains on Aug. 9 damaged about 20 roads and other municipal infrastructure.

An online notice posted by the Outaouais municipality said the state of emergency was lifted effective at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

“The lifting of the local state of emergency is motivated by the fact that our municipal teams, with the help of local contractors, have mobilized from their day-to-day work to repair and secure the affected roads, as well as some infrastructures such as drinking water plants and parks,” the notice said.

“As of today, about 10 roads and some infrastructure remain in need of repair. The work is currently underway and will continue for the next few weeks, if not months.”

Still in place and scheduled to run until Aug. 31 is an advisory asking those Chelsea residents served by the municipal water system to reduce water consumption to facilitate maintenance work at the filtration plant.

That notice has been in effect since Aug. 14. “This work is necessary to ensure the quality and safety of the water supply,” it said.

The downpour on Aug. 9 stemmed from the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.
