Contraband tobacco, cash and methamphetamines seized in Gatineau raids

Several suspects, including two people in their 70s, face several charges following a crackdown on illegal tobacco in Gatineau.

On Dec. 16, officers raided an apartment building on Gouin Street, in the Gatineau sector, to execute a search warrant.

The investigation began earlier in the month based on information that indicated the suspect was sourcing tobacco supplies from Indigenous reserves.

The resident, a 47-year-old man, cooperated with police in a search of the premises. Police seized several items, including 450 cartons of contraband cigarettes, 371 methamphetamine pills and about $40,000 in cash.

A 2008 Honda Accord was also seized.

The man was arrested and charges have been submitted to the province’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions.

He will also face a criminal charge under the Tobacco Tax Act.

Two days later, police officers searched a multi-unit complex on Mont-Bleu Boulevard.

Police seized 18 cartons and two loose packets of contraband cigarettes.

The residents, who are in their 70s, will face criminal charges under the Tobacco Tax Act, police said.
