Gatineau voters head to the polls Sunday in a byelection to name a new mayor and city councillor.
Seven candidates have registered in the vote to replace former mayor France Bélisle, who stepped down earlier this year.
Bélisle, who was elected in 2021, cited death threats and a “hostile” political environment as reasons for leaving the position.
Candidates for the post are:

- Maude Marquis-Bissonette
Marquis-Bissonette is leader of the Action Gatineau municipal party. Ducharme is a former mayor of both Gatineau and pre-amalgamation city of Hull.
Kamanyama was an independent councillor in the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward.
A poll by Sigma Research commissioned by Radio Canada at mid-campaign indicated Marquis-Bissonnette (37 per cent support) and Ducharme (23 per cent) support were in the lead, after distributing undecided voters proportionally.
The survey had a margin of error of 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
There are three candidates In the vote to replace Kamanyana in Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward. A fourth candidate recently abandoned his candidacy.
Candidates are:
- Catherine Craig-St-Louis, Action Gatineau party
- Marie-Pier Lacroix, independent
- Kethlande Pierre, independent
According to the Elections Québec provincial agency, there are 203,032 registered voters in Gatineau. There are 9,305 registered voters in the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward, the agency says.
The polls open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Sunday
