Gatineau police arrested a 34-year-old man early Friday after he appeared at a convenience store on Lorrain Boulevard carrying a rifle.

In a release, police said the man told people at the store that he was in the military. He made no threatening gestures police said in a release.

People at the store called police, but the man had left by the time police arrived. People at the store said the man was a regular customer and it was believed he was camping in some nearby woods.

Police located a rough campsite, but there was no one there.

However, police seized two hunting guns and ammunition at the scene.

The rifles were registered and the owner was located. He said the rifles were stolen from his car the night before.

Police searched the area again and the suspect was located on Lorrain Boulevard near Rue des Fleurs.

The 34-year-old man is to appear in Quebec court Friday.

In a release, police said that “it is not prohibited by law to store firearms in a vehicle if all the rules are respected.

But police reminded “citizens that zero risk does not exist and recommends that firearm owners (not) leave them in a vehicle for longer than necessary and to avoid leaving them unattended.”
