One man was arrested in the ByWard Market Saturday evening after an altercation left a bylaw officer with a broken leg.

Ottawa police said a By-law and Regulatory Services officer was issuing a ticket on York Street around 8:30 p.m. when the driver of the vehicle being ticketed tried to drive away.

The bylaw officer was struck by the vehicle, resulting in a fracture to their leg, police said, noting that bystanders and witnesses provided aid to the injured officer.

Sarfaraz Khan, 35, was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, danger operation and mischief to property.

He appeared in court Sunday.
