A 27-year-old man is facing numerous charges for allegedly assaulting a security guard during a University of Ottawa graduation ceremony, police say.
Ottawa Police said Monday that “several individuals” disrupted the graduation ceremony at the Shaw Centre on Sunday.
“As the individuals were being removed, an individual used a noxious substance on a security guard. The security guard was seen by paramedics but she did not require hospitalization,” police said. “Police located the individual in the area of Tabaret Hall and later arrested him when it was safe to do so.”

Police did not name the 27-year-old man, but said he faces charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, administering a noxious substance and mischief. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.
The University of Ottawa held graduation ceremonies all weekend at the Shaw Centre in downtown Ottawa.
Jesse Robichaud, a media spokesperson for the University of Ottawa, said the university wouldn’t be commenting on police matters.
“Convocation is a meaningful and hard-earned milestone for students and their families, and it is a chance for our community to come together to celebrate our graduates and their achievements,” he said via email. “Everyone in our community has the right to celebrate these accomplishments in an environment of safety and respect, and we implemented enhanced security measures to ensure convocation is inclusive and accessible to all. “
