The official count was expected to take place later Monday.
Bélisle, who was elected in 2021, cited death threats and a “hostile” political environment as reasons for leaving the position.
The other candidates for the post in Sunday’s byelection were:
- Rémi Bergeron
- Stéphane Bisson
- Olive Kamanyana
- Mathieu Saint-Jean
- Daniel Feeny
Kamanyama was an independent councillor in the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward and received 10.9 per cent of the vote for mayor.
There were three candidates in the vote to replace Kamanyana as councillor. A fourth candidate recently abandoned his candidacy.
Catherine Craig-St-Louis, of the Action Gatineau party, won the position with nearly 41.8 per cent of the vote, according to the unofficial results.
The other two candidates were Marie-Pier Lacroix, independent; and Kethlande Pierre, independent.
