Montreal girl, 16, charged after OPP uses spike belt to halt stolen vehicle

A 16-year-old Montreal girl faces several charges after provincial police in Hawkesbury used a spike belt to halt a stolen vehicle on Highway 417 near the Quebec border early in the morning of Nov. 28.

OPP said in a news release that officers attempted to stop the vehicle just after 5 a.m.

When the driver refused to stop, officers placed a “tire deflation device” across the highway near “mile marker 3.” The device brought the vehicle to a halt.

The suspect was charged with:

  • Possessing property obtained by crime over $5000 – in Canada
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Drive motor vehicle – no licence

The suspect cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

She was released from custody and is to appear in court in l’Orignal, Ont. on Dec. 12.
