Ottawa police have confirmed that a newborn baby was left outside St. Brother André School in Gloucester earlier this month.

“On Sept. 11, at approximately 11:40 a.m., Ottawa police, as part of a tiered response, attended the Gloucester area for a baby in distress,” Ottawa Police Service said in a statement to the Ottawa Citizen on Tuesday.

School staff took care of the baby until police and paramedics arrived.

“The personnel from the school immediately cared for the baby,” the Ottawa Paramedic Service said in a statement. “The patient was treated on scene by the paramedics and taken to the hospital in serious condition.”

The paramedics said they do not receive updates after patients are received at hospital.

Nadine Vigneault, the principal of the school, confirmed to the Citizen that the incident took place at St. Brother André, but would not comment further.

The elementary school is part of the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

Citing confidentiality agreements and the fact it’s an on-going investigation, Ottawa police offered no further comment on the location and or status of the baby.
